Career Paths You Can Follow After Finishing Computer Certification Courses

After taking part in computer certification courses, a student will earn either an associate’s degree in computer systems technology or a bachelor’s. The earning of an associate’s degree will take about two years, while a bachelor’s degree takes about four years. If a student prefers, he or she can go on to earn an advanced degree from a university.

Associate’s Degree of Applied Science in Computer Systems Technology

In this degree program, students will be introduced to the basics of wireless technology, computer hardware and software and numerous types of operating systems. After graduating with an associate’s degree, students will be able to sit for certification through a number of associations. Common types of certification that are pursued include that of a Certified Technology Specialist and a Microsoft Technology Associate.

Prerequisites

To enroll in the associate’s program, a student will first need a high school diploma or GED. Some college programs will prefer the student to have previous experience working with computers; however, this preference is not a requirement.

Coursework

During the completion of the program, students will take courses that focus on the following topics:

- Hardware and electronics

- Website design

- Software

- Operating systems

- Networking and databases

If a person wishes to climb his or her way up the corporate ladder, it will be of the utmost value to pursue a bachelor’s degree. Beyond this point, if desired, the person can then obtain a master’s degree. To enroll in the bachelor’s program, a student will need a high school diploma or GED. In addition, he or she will need to complete certain college-level courses, including college algebra and computer science.

While completing the program, students will take courses focusing on:

- Computer programming

- Advanced network architecture

- Computer graphics

- Data security

- Information systems management

- Computer forensics

Employment Outlook

With a degree in computer and information technology, there are many career paths that can be traveled down. Many people who hold this type of degree end up working for equipment wholesalers, major universities and other types of technology-related corporations. On average, those who enter into the occupation of computer support specialist will make somewhere around $43,000 a year. As a computer systems administrator, which will require a bachelor’s degree, a person can expect to make upwards of $66,000 a year.

- Senior IT Auditor: make about $95,000 a year, requires a bachelor’s degree or higher

- Senior Web Developer: make about $95,000 year, requires a bachelor’s degree or higher

- Help Desk: make about $38,000 a year, requires an associate’s degree or higher

- Staff Consultant: make about $70,000 a year, requires a bachelor’s degree or higher

- Business Intelligence Analyst: make about $90,000 a year, requires a bachelor’s degree or higher

- Network Manager: make about $80,000 a year, requires an associate’s degree or higher as well as 10 years of experience
