IT Certifications: A Foot In The Door Or Just The Opposite?

With the increasing demand for highly skilled IT professionals, some people may choose to earn a certification either online or by attending a local school for credit. Whether they have a knack for understanding computers or want to learn a new set of skills, people seek out technology certifications for a variety of reasons. But do these certifications really make a difference in the industry as a whole? There seems to be some debate as to whether IT certifications really matter. The following will examine some of the pros and cons for obtaining such a certification and how it might be applicable in today’s job market.

Basic Requirements

The most attractive feature of both online and in-person courses is that a person doesn’t need to meet a stringent set of standards to enroll. They need determination, focus, a desire to learn and other general attributes of anyone attending any type of training program. On the positive side, this means that anyone interested in an IT career can start at a base level and work his or her way up in the industry. The downside is that this also might over-saturate the market with less-than-qualified individuals. The increased availability of quick, online certification programs may allow people without real ingenuity to cheapen the industry as a whole.

However, widespread knowledge might actually help to level the playing field. Just as medical, legal and other professionals must obtain proper certification and meet minimum state licensing requirements, those who choose to complete an IT training course will have a base level of knowledge from which to springboard into higher levels in their careers.

Salary & Opportunity

Along with IT certifications come advanced job growth and salary opportunity. Those with on-the-job training may have a leg up on experience and knowledge, but companies hoping to hire new IT personnel may view those with certificates as more attractive candidates. For one thing, candidates with limited experience but a professional certification can be trained to the company’s unique standards. Another advantage is that certification indicates the right attitude and willingness for self-improvement. Hiring managers associate professional certifications with someone who is committed to the task at hand, even if that task doesn’t necessarily carry the same weight as 20 years of professional experience.

Increased job opportunity brings with it increased salary potential. Because IT certification programs are relatively inexpensive depending on the type of program and compared with a traditional degree program, someone who chooses to invest in an IT program will most likely recover the expense in a comparable salary over the course of his or her career.

Pursuing an IT certification may be a great investment in the future, but some argue that experience matters much more in the computer technology sector. The technology industry may naturally value someone who intrinsically knows computers and how they function over someone new to the industry with limited hands-on experience. Weighing all the options, obtaining a certification seems to depend largely on one’s own personal goals and objectives.
